The National Institute on Drug Abuse is a leading government agency focused on researching drugs and their effects. Established in 1974, NIDA is part of the United States Department of Health. Its mission is is understand drug abuse and addiction, as well as to develop successful treatments and prevention methods. NIDA conducts its own research, supports external research at universities and other institutions, and delivers education and training to doctors. The agency also works directly with local organizations to address the public health impact of drug abuse.
